Bug Encountered On: January 31, 2009
Bug: Google flags search results with the message "This site may harm your computer" if the site is known to install malicious software in the background or otherwise surreptitiously. Google does this to protect users against visiting sites that could harm their computers.
Bug Lasted: For approximately 40 minutes on January 31, 2009
Effect: All search results were mistakenly classified as Malware and could therefore not be clicked; instead a warning message was displayed and the user was required to enter the requested URL manually.
Why the Bug Occurred: The bug was caused by human error. Google Jan 31st morning released an update to its list of URLs known to install malicious software and "unfortunately the URL of '/' was mistakenly checked as a value to the file and '/' expands to all URLs.
How it was Solved: Google Vice President of Search Products & User Experience wrote in an official Google blog post explaining the glitch. "Fortunately, our on-call site reliability team found the problem quickly and reverted the file."
